In Memoriam

On this day in 1985, the wrestling world lost one-time WWWF Tag Team Champion Tarzan Tyler at the age of 58. A native of Montreal, Tyler began his career in local promotions in the early 1950’s. In the 60’s, he branched out to compete in America, finding far more success than he ever did in his homeland. He won championships in Central States, Florida, Mid-South and the WWWF aswell as a tag team success in Japan. Tyler would also regularly challenge for the NWA and AWA World Championships. His career was effectively ended in 1973 when he broke his back in a match against Andre The Giant. He returned to Dino Bravo’s promotion as a manager, but never stepped foot in the ring again. Tyler perished in a car accident alongside fellow wrestler Pierre ‘Mad Dog’ Lefebvre and referee Adrien Desbois as the three travelled back from a show in Quebec.
