Blog: Remembering Mike Boyette

MOBILE, Alabama – It was a memorable wire fence match in 1971 between Mike Boyette and “Cowboy” Bob Kelly in which “The Hippie” was truly born.

Boyette lost that match – and lost his hair in the process, as it was stuffed into bags and sold to Gulf Coast wrestling fans. He was a “heel” at the time (wrestling terminology for a villain) but would soon return to the territory as a “face” or good guy.

The local legend of the “The California Hippie” grew.

“I was cutting it off and tossing it through the fence to the spectators,” Kelly, 76, of Mobile, recalled Friday. “He would leave but come back as my partner.”

Boyette, whose real name is Mike Bowyer, died around 10 a.m. Thursday at Providence Hospital in Mobile. He was 71.
