Wrestling By The Numbers: Dale ‘Buddy Roberts’ Hey

Legendary wrestler Dale ‘Buddy Roberts’ Hey who was a member of both the legendary tag-teams The Hollywood Blondes and The Fabulous Freebirds has passed away. The 67-year-old Vancouver British Columbia native died last Thursday November 29th after battling pneumonia. Dale Hey had also had a lengthy battle with throat cancer after retiring from professional wrestling and had become an advocate against smoking cigarettes. Throughout his 25-year professional wrestling career Hey had his most success under the name Buddy Roberts but also competed as Dale Valentine, Dale Roberts and Buddy Smith. He made his pro-debut in 1965 after having been trained by Ivan Koloff. After beginning his career working as a prelim wrestler for the American Wrestling Association he joined forces with veteran wrestler Jerry Brown and became the tag-team The Hollywood Blondes managed by Sir Oliver Humperdink.

The trio became huge stars in the 1970’s working all over the United States, for New Japan Pro Wrestling, and being one of the hottest heel acts in Montreal Quebec wrestling during one of the city’s hottest wrestling booms periods. The Hollywood Blondes wrestled against Bruno Sammartino and Edouard Carpentier in the co-main event of a wrestling show that still holds the Quebec wrestling attendance record to this day. After the trio fell apart in the late 1970’s Hey became Dale Valentine and had a short stint being managed by Johnny Valentine. In 1980 Dale Hey once again became Buddy Roberts and was put in another trio this time with Terry Gordy and Michael P.S. Hayes as The Fabulous Freebirds. The group went on to be one of top heel acts in the 1980’s having legendary feuds in Mid-South Wrestling, Georgia Championship Wrestling and then setting all-time box office records in World Class Championship Wrestling in Texas in battles against The Junkyard Dog and The Von Erich Family. Dale Hey retired from in-ring competition in 1988 and after working as manager he left the industry completely in 1990. He was inducted alongside Michael P.S. Hayes and Terry Gordy into the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall Of Fame in 2005.
