Julius Caesar created the leap year around 45BC. There have been 514 leap years since his declaration. Without the inclusion of “leap years” every 4 years, the date would be somewhere around March 23, 2014. The Mayans didn’t not include “leap years” on their calendars. So congratulations Jesse, you made it!
I stopped listening right after he said what he said about the Mayan Calender so I don’t know if one of the hosts pointed this out to him or not but…
The Mayan calender works on a system of “Baktuns”, 1 Baktun = roughly 394 years as we know a year. The Mayan calender doesn’t end this December it is just the ending on a Baktun (the 13th) which has happened 12 times before (yes that’s right the Mayan calender “ended” 12 previous times). Not to mention this past may during a new excavation of a classic Mayan site they found more calenders which have Baktuns that go all the way though the modern year 3500 (so like 1,488 years from now).
This whole “Mayan Money Scheme” that people have been getting rich off of for years now was simply because the scientist didn’t dig in the correct hole. And even if the Calender of a long-gone civilization did end in what people this is this December there is a 99.99999999% chance that it ended just because the dudes creating it figured “ehh our Great-Great-Great-Great-Great Grandkids can make a new one if they’re alive a thousand years from now”.
I’m gonna sit down one day with some scrap wood & a sharpie and make up a calender for the year 6969 and then bury it hoping that sometime in the future somebody finds it and thinks the world is gonna end in 6969 for the sole reason that I was to lazy to make a calender for the year 7070. hahaha
Actually ninja, some years that should be leap years are not (like 2000 IIRC, that didn’t have a leap year), so you are a few days off on that.
Actually, I stand corrected, 2000 was a leap year, but some years do not, so the 514 number might still be off
This clip is super old. It’s far from relevant.
@Scott, I’m sure the Mayans had a good time with this one!
If they were alive today, I’m sure they’d LOVE this practical joke many of these idiots fall for
