Reason behind the Heyman-Punk alliance

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that the CM Punk-Paul Heyman alliance idea just came up in recent weeks. The reason? WWE wanted something to put Punk over as the top heel and where he wouldn’t end up getting cheered as a babyface.

WWE did a good job for once

  2. McMahon says:

Definitely a really smart move. That’s how managers need to be used.

  3. sicbink says:

As long as the WWE doesn’t drop the ball, this could have potential…

  4. James says:

In a way, I sensed a Punk-Heyman alliance for a long time, due to Paul being always high on Punk when WWE restarted their version of ECW years ago and still is. So, in a way, it doesn’t come off as a surprise in some people’s eyes.

  5. Steven says:

@sicbink: They already dropped the ball, as they made the WRONG star the heel.

The right star they should have turned heel is John Cena. It would not only refresh his incredibly stale gimmick, but merely turning heel would make much more of an impact than even CM Punk turning heel.

  6. ROB_MOR says:

    I dig that idea, Steven.

  7. Seanyd says:

@Steven, that’s so true, the impact of cena snapping and attacking someone and turning into the badguy, would be HUGE!

  8. Tony says:

FINALLY, creative came up with something CLEVER!!!!!!!!!

  9. RS says:

I totally agree with Steven as well!

  10. QouteTheRaven,Nevermore says:

WWE won’t turn Cena heel because, quite frankly he puts butts in seats, simple as that.

  11. TRUTH says:

Austin was the best heel and he put butts in the seats, fact is, for ratings cena should turn heel. the pg and baby face gimmick with cena can last only for so long.

  12. RYDER-MAN says:

@Steven lol I couldn’t agree with you more.

I like that Punk and Heyman are being put together, but here is where I lose track of things:

The objective is to make Punk a heel without gettting cheered. Punk is cheered by a strong underground following of smart marks who enjoy CM Punk for his superior in ring talent and mic skills. So how do they try to make him even more or a heel? They put him with ANOTHER guy who has a very similar underground following of smart marks and loved for his superior booking, mic skills, and creative abilities.

So again WWE you have yet again screwed up, but as the saying goes “even a blind squirrel finds a nut once and a while”. So good job.

  13. RYDER-MAN says:

@QouteTheRaven,Nevermore- John Cena doesn’t put butts in seats. John Cena has nothing special to offer such as in-ring talent, extra-ordinary mic skills, or an interesting back story. John Cena could have been anyone that the WWE decided to book as the guy who always outwits his adversary on the mic according to the script, or gets the girl, or “never backs down from a fight”, or becomes a ten time WWE champion with average in ring ability in my (and many others) opinions.

Everything people love about him is all planned and staged in order make him look better. What he is PORTRAYED as is what brings small children, single moms, and other lemmings to the WWE.
Creative could have given the character and top spot to ANYONE. They would probably be more profitable right now if they would have given the character to a guy more deserving.
That is why John Cena is STILL BOOED after almost 8 YEARS of trying to get him over with the fans. Because frankly Cena doesn’t suck, he’s just not that good (much harder to say in chant form though).

  14. Joey R. says:

Cena won’t turn heel until Wrestlemania 29, when he beats The Rock for WWE Title using underhanded tactics.

  15. Manny says:

If you sit here and read two paragraph comments, you have too much time on your hands. Punk and Heyman is awesome though

  16. Fisha695 says:

Maybe I’m a little backwards here but I grew up on ECW, it was my local promotion (along with WXW which is now WXW C4 as the main WXW moved to Fla) so I am a “Paul Heyman Guy” in the truest sense of the phrase so if anything this makes me (and I’m sure I’m not alone here) “Cheer” Punk more.

  17. T says:

If they put Super Cena heel it would be a disaster for the WWE as his merchandise (bought by kids mostly) sales would drop. Yes Austin was somewhat of a heel but 1.) It was a different era 2.) The WWE is now a public company and the loss of sales would equal unhappy shareholders. 3.) Linda is still trying to run for office.

The WWE would rather play it safe these days it seems.

  18. art123guy says:

I thought a Cena heel turn would be good as well, then I saw the (Wrestlmania?) special with him and all the Make-A-Wish Foundation kids he sees and realized it would be a huge mistake. Those kids need Super Cena more than we need heel Cena.

They started making him interesting right after his loss to The Rock. He should have lost to Brock which should have caused him to question his place in wrestling. A vulnerable Cena would be an interesting change of pace.

  19. Geoff says:

As long as WWE doesnt let Heyman do all the talking for Punk as he did for Lesnar (which I assume is not likely given Punk’s mic skills), it should be good for business in terms of solidifying Punk as a definite heel. If the male fans actually cared to boo the both of them though, that is another matter.

  20. deathedge says:

Oh yeah, he puts butts in seats alright. That’s why hour 3 with the Del Rio-Cena main event caused RAW’s ratings to dip lower then they’ve been in a long time. Bare in mind that this was the same show where Punk decided to “Take Labor Day off.”
