WWE SummerSlam Preview and Predictions
Aug 19, 2012 - by Michael Riba
Tomorrow night, WWE will present us with the 25th-annual SummerSlam pay-per-view. This years card currently features seven matches, with two more possibly being added, as well as a musical performance from Kevin Rudolf. I like the card for this year’s show, as I feel it is better than the card for the past few SummerSlam events. Without any further delay, here are my official predictions for the show!
Pre-Show Match: WWE United States Championship Match: Santino Marella (c) vs. Antonio Cesaro
Cesaro has picked up two victories over Marella recently on Smackdown, hence why he has an opportunity to capture his first Championship since coming to WWE. This past week, after defeating Zack Ryder, Cesaro shoved Marella over the announce table and they yelled at each other. That’s about all of the build for this match. Being the pre-show, I do not see a title switch happening, although I would prefer Cesaro to get the win.
Prediction: Santino Marella retains the WWE United States Championship.
WWE Tag Team Championship Match: Kofi Kingston and R-Truth (c) vs. The Prime Time Players
I realized something this past week on Raw. The Prime Time Players are very boring without A.W. as their manager. Maybe they’ll grow on me without him, but it didn’t work before he defected from Epico and Primo to join them. The Prime Time Player’s title shot has been brewing for a while now, and it’s good to see the Tag Team Titles being defended on one of the “Big Four” pay-per-views for the first time since Survivor Series 2010. It seems as though The Prime Time Players have gotten the upper-hand on the Champs since they came around, and I see that ontinuing tomorrow night.
Prediction: The Prime Time Players win the WWE Tag Team Championship.
Daniel Bryan vs. Kane
I agree with Daniel Bryan. I would rather see him in a Championship match than going one-on-one against Kane. On the other hand, I can see why he’s not. Both of these men went against CM Punk in a Triple Threat Match a couple of months ago and lost. Daniel Bryan went one-on-one against CM Punk last month and lost. Therefore, we get the ending, possibly, to this side-feud that started a few months ago. I see Bryan trying everything he can to win this match, and coming close to winning by doing so, only to have his efforts thwarted by Kane turning the tide and ending the match with a big choke slam. Will we see an appearance by Charlie Sheen? Who knows, maybe.
Prediction: Kane gets the win.
WWE Intercontinental Championship Match: The Miz (c) vs. Rey Mysterio
Rey Mysterio earned this opportunity two weeks ago when he pinned The Miz on Smackdown. This past week on Smackdown, the team of Mysterio and Sin Cara defeated The Miz and Cody Rhodes. Mysterio kept the upper-hand on The Miz after that match and hit him with a 6-1-9 after turning The Miz’s sneak attack around on him. Mysterio then held up the Intercontinental Title before setting it back down on the arena floor. That’s a close as Mysterio will get to the Intercontinental Title. The Miz will use some cunning, heel tactics to get the win in this one.
Prediction: The Miz retains the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
World Heavyweight Championship Match: Sheamus (c) vs. Alberto Del Rio
I wonder if I’m the only one that hopes this is the last match between these two. Don’t get me wrong, I like both of them, but their chemistry in the ring just does not match up well at all. This is also the match that was set, got cancelled by Smackdown General Manager Booker T, and then put back into place on this past week’s Smackdown. Sheamus’ arm was “injured” in the recent attacks by Del Rio and his henchmen, so that will play a factor into the match tomorrow night. I still don’t think that will be enough for Del Rio, however.
Prediction: Sheamus retains the World Heavyweight Championship.
Chris Jericho vs. Dolph Ziggler
This is the match that I am looking forward to the most. These two will steal the show, no doubt about it. The story behind this feud is that Ziggler keeps saying that Jericho can’t win the big one anymore and wants to prove it by beating him at SummerSlam. Jericho says he has had some bad luck, but can still win the big one, and has turned completely face while doing so. I’m hoping this match gets somewhere in the 20 minute range, if not more. Ziggler has gotten the upper-hand on Jericho more than Jericho has on Ziggler on Raw and Smackdown over the past few weeks, but I don’t think that will be the case tomorrow night.
Prediction: Chris Jericho picks up the win.
Brock Lesnar vs. Triple H
We have seen the build for this match for a while now, even when both guys didn’t even appear on Raw. I was absolutely dreading that this may be the main event of the evening, but it seems as though the WWE Championship Match will take that spot. Shawn Michaels was supposed to be in Triple H’s corner, but WWE is reporting that his injuries that he suffered at the hands of Lesnar are too severe and he will be unable to attend SummerSlam. Yeah, we’ll see about that. In the end, I expect this feud to continue into the fall, even if it’s just for one more match between the two. If that is the case, I see an F-5 in Triple H’s future.
Prediction: Brock Lesnar picks up the win.
WWE Championship Triple Threat Match: CM Punk (c) vs. John Cena vs. The Big Show
Let’s be honest. This is CM Punk vs. John Cena with The Big Show thrown in to take the pin fall. Show has been a complete afterthought in the build for this match, except for the Raw a couple of weeks ago where he knocked both Punk and Cena out with the WMD Punch. I could see wither Punk or Cena going over in this match, and I’m hoping it’s not the latter. I am personally hoping for Punk to hold the title for as close to a year, if not longer than a year, as possible. Either Punk or Cena will go on to face The Rock at the Royal Rumble, with the other facing him at WrestleMania XXIX. If I had my way, it would be Rock vs. Cena II at the Rumble and Rock vs. Punk at Mania. Anyway, my prediction is this: Cena hits Show with the Attitude Adjustment, only for Punk to come in and steal the pin.
Prediction: CM Punk retains the WWE Championship.
Damien Sandow will defeat Brodus Clay if their match takes place.
Sin Cara will defeat Cody Rhodes if their match takes place.
We may see some kind of altercation with Ryback, Tyler Reks, Curt Hawkins, and Jinder Mahal, but it’s highly unlikely.
