~ UFC bantamweight veteran Jeff “Big Frog” Curran (33-15-1) was released by the UFC following 2 straight decision losses, leaving the promotion winless in 3 career attempts. Curran, 34, has fought for PRIDE/Strikeforce/IFL. He also suffered 4 straight losses in the WEC.
~ Hey guess what happened on Friday in Astana, Kazakstan at Bushido Vol. 51? Strikeforce/PRIDE/DREAM super-heavyweight veteran Bob “The Beast” Sapp, 37, lost to Tölegen Akylbekov via Submission (Strikes) just 92 seconds into the fight. This was Sapp’s 5th MMA bout of the year. He’s 0-5, all 5 of the losses have come under 2 minutes. Sapp has lost 8 in a row to see his record drop to 11-14-1. He’s 1-11 in his last 12 bouts.
~ Friday night’s UFC on FX 3 event drew an announced attendance of 6,635 and a live gate of $329,110. The figures fell well short of the UFC’s typical marks, and Dana White admitted that the company considers southern Florida a “tough market” that the organization is “still trying to figure out.”
~ Aaron Simpson (11-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) will still fight at UFC on FUEL TV 4, and onetime UFC vet Kenny Robertson (11-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) is the man who will face him. UFC on FUEL TV 4 takes place July 11 at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. Simpson is making his welterweight debut.
~ A lightweight matchup between talented prospects is the latest addition to “Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy,” as Ryan Couture (4-1 MMA, 4-1 SF) meets Joe Duarte (10-2 MMA, 2-0 SF). “Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy” takes place July 14 at Rose Garden in Portland, Ore.
