~ Last Thursday, at the Paulo Sarasate Gymnasium in Fortaleza, Brazil, UFC/DREAM lightweight veteran Willamy “Chiquerim” Freire (20-5) got back on the winning track. He submitted (Guillotine Choke) Zozimar de Oliveira Silva Jr at 1:45 into Round 2 at the inaugural “Brazilian King Fighter.” Freire suffered UFC & DREAM losses in 2011. He’s 12-2 in his last 14 contests.
~ Last Friday, at the Casman Centre in Fort McMurray, Canada, UFC heavyweight veteran Tim “The Thrashing Machine” Hague returned to MMA action. Hague, 29, lost to Mike Hackert (5-1) via unanimous decision in the main event of Prestige Fighting Championship 4. Hague (14-6) went 1-4 in the UFC during 3 different stints with the promotion.
~ This past weekend’s “Strikeforce: Heavyweight Grand Prix Final” event officially drew 5,413 attendees for a $226,005 live gate. Of the 5,413 attendees, a substantial 2,609 (48 percent) received complimentary admission. Strikeforce’s debut show, “Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Gracie,” set a since-broken North American MMA attendance record with 18,265 attendees in 2006. Additionally, the most recent event at the venue, “Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg,” drew 9,059 attendees for a $533,215 gate in early 2011.
~ Last night in Kansas City, Missouri, Titan Fighting Championship presented TFC 22: Johnson vs. Branch. The main event featured UFC veterans Anthony “Rumble” Johnson & Dave “Tree” Branch. Johnson (11-4) defeated Branch (10-3) via unanimous decision on HDNet. Johnson was released by the UFC in January for his failure to make weight.
