~ A strong winning streak continued as a strong losing streak continued on Friday in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. UFC/PRIDE heavyweight veteran Soa Palelei won his 7th straight fight by TKO (Punches) when he beat PRIDE/Strikeforce veteran Bob Sapp, who’s now lost 7 straight, in only 12 seconds. The bout occured for Cage Fighting Championship 21. Palelei is now 17-3 while Sapp is 11-13. Sapp is 1-10 in his last 11 bouts & already has 4 losses, under a combined 4:01, in 2012.
~ UFC welterweight veteran & Sengoku 2010 welterweight grand prix winner Keita “K-Taro” Nakamura won on Friday night in Tokyo, Japan at “Shooto – 5th Round.” Nakamura (24-5-2) defeated UFC/PRIDE vet Yuki Sasaki (23-20-1) via unanimous decision. Nakamura is 7-1 in his last 8 bouts. He suffered 3 decision losses in the UFC, 1 in 2006, 2007, 2008.
~ Earlier this month, the UFC continued its “Octagon of Excellence” community outreach program by committing $5,000 to The Urban Assembly’s Bronx Academy of Letters. “We got involved after we learned that even though this school is based on the academic principles of literature, they had sanctioned an ongoing jiu-jitsu club,” UFC exec Reed Harris stated. The grant will assist the academy with the purchase of mixed martial arts equipment.
~ Josh Barnett (31-6 MMA, 2-1 SF) immediately went to the hospital after a grueling five-round fight that saw Daniel Cormier (10-0 MMA, 7-0 SF) earn a unanimous-decision victory to win the Strikeforce world heavyweight grand prix. Barnett broke his left hand in the first round of the fight and had it set in a splint by a doctor, who said it was not a “spiral” break, manager Leland LaBarre said. An orthopedist now will determine the extent of the damage.
~ A rematch between UFC veteran Will Campuzano (9-4) and Steve Garcia (9-5) will determine Legacy Fighting Championship’s inaugural flyweight champion. The Legacy FC 12 event takes place July 13 at Houston’s Arena Theater. The night’s main card airs on HDNet. Campuzano won their first bout via split decision.
