Episode 11: Like a Spartan
The opens with a recap of last weeks fights Michael Chiesa and James Vick advancing to the semi finals. They also hype the announcement of Faber’s new opponent at UFC 148 which will be made at the end of the show. Chiesa says his parents are his inspiration when he fights.
Team Faber’s Chris Saunders vs. Team Cruz’s Vinc Pichel prepare for their fight as Faber says one minute Saunders lacks confidence the next minute he is the best fighter on the show. Pichel feels the fight is his to win he makes it a hard fought battle but will end it quickly if the opportunity presents itself.
Vinc Pichel vs. Chris Saunders
Round 1: Pichel dictates the pace immediately with some aggressive punches and clinches with Saunders against the cage. Pichel some short punches to the face but Saunders switches positions against the cage and trips Pichel to the ground. Pichel almost gets his back in the scramble down but he couldn’t hold on. The story of the round is Pichel gets the advantage in the stand up and then shoots for the takedown and fails.
Round 2: Saunders lands a left inside kick but doesn’t follow it up as Pichel ties him up against the fance. Pichel is not doing anything with the clinch as Saunders has his arms tied up with under hooks. Pichel takes him down but Saunders gets right back up. Pichel shoots for a double leg but Saunders sprawls and lands a couple of punches that causes Pichel to bleed from the nose. Saunders is now control the action against the cage with head control and knees. Pichel switches levels and takes Saunders down at the 1:30 mark but he is not doing much with his arms wrapped around Saunders waist. Saunders switches positions and gains control. With 0:15 left, Pichel explodes and hurts Saunders with some hard punches to end the round.
Winner: Vinc Pichel via majority decision (20-18, 20-18, 19-19)
Team Faber Training Session
Faber finds himself in a unique situation with two of his fighters are fighting each other in Andy Ogle and Al Iaquinta. Faber is going to stay out of the coaching and assign his assistant coaches to corner a fighter and won’t tell them until the day of the fight. Ogle says he has fought Al in his head a million times and has fought him in training a million times. Ogle says this is his time to shine and he wants this more than anyone. Faber says Ogle is the guy that everyone feels will get beat but he keeps surprising people
Al Iaquinta feels he is the hardest worker on the show because he is the first person on the mat and the last person to leave the gym. He says Ogle is good everywhere but not great at anything. Faber says he can’t tell sometimes is Al wants to punch you in the face of buy you a meal. Al says he is here for one thing and that is the UFC contract and nothing will get in his way.
Andy Ogle vs. Al Iaquinta
Round 1: Ogle is circling outside as both fighters exchange kicks. Iaquinta lands a kick to the body and a hard overhand right. Ogle is throwing some windmill punches looking for that one big shot. Ogle lands a three punch combo but Iaquinta counters with a right hand that drops Ogle. Iaquinta charges in but is unable to finish as Ogle gets back to his feet. Iaquinta drops Ogle again with a vicious right elbow to temple and follows him to the ground with a hammer fist to glaze Ogle’s eyes and the referee comes in stop the fight.
Winner: Al Iaquinta via TKO @ 4:44 of the 1st Round
Dana White announces next week’s semi final fights which will be James Vick vs. Micheal Chiesa and Al Iaquinta vs. Vinc Pichel. It’s time for the big announcement. Who will Urijah Faber fight at UFC 148 on 7/7 in Las Vegas. We fade to black for a nice video package and it is Renan Barao who will fight Faber. Barao comes out fighter’s entrance for a stare down with Faber. They shake hands and Dana apologizes to Faber for not telling him sooner but he didn’t want it to leak.
