Episode 9: Become the Hero
Team Faber is leading the pack at 4-3 after Chris Saunders’ win over Sam Sicilia, last week. Mike Chiesa enters the Team Cruz locker room to check on a devastated Sicilia and Dominick tells him he did great and should have won. The final first round fight will be Mike Rio vs. Andy Ogle. Rio knocked out Ogle’s friend to get into the house and Ogle feels it will be a match up of dudes with sexy hair cuts.
Uriah Faber and Dominick Cruz compete in a United States Marine Corps obstacle course involving shooting guns in the desert with the final stage involving the use of a grenade launcher. Damn, this is a big change from the Bowling and Basketball of seasons past. The winning coach normally gets $10,000 but Tap Out included an addational $10,000 making the winning coaches prize $20,000 with $1,500 per fighter. Cruz starts off strong as Faber has trouble climbing the 20 foot rope and misses the first couple of shots at the first station. Cruz is way ahead of Faber at the second rifle station as he hits the first jug but can’t hit the second one. Faber catches up and hits both jugs and moves on to the next station while Cruz is still stuck on the second jug.
Faber makes it to the final stage and destroys the first target with the grenade launcher. Cruz arrives shortly after and nails his first target too. It’s neck and neck until Faber finally hits the second target for the win and a lot of coach for he and his team. Faber pretends the money is too heavy and asks Dominick to carry it to his car.
Team Faber Training Session #1
Andy Ogle says he got into martial arts as a kid to keep the bullies at bay and eventually, it became the focus of his life. Faber admits that wrestling is Ogle’s weakness but he will work with him on footwork and defense in order to break Rio. Ogle says he will make Rio scared to shoot and Rio will have to kill him to beat him.
Team Cruz Training Session #2
Dominick tells Mike Rio that he wants him to drill hard on his wrestling and work on control because he feels the fight will go where Mike wants it to go. Rio says he didn’t get into trouble growing up in Flordia because he was too focused on wrestling and training. Cruz says Rio’s stand up has improved since the show started and see nothing but victory to tie up at 4-4.
Coaches Meeting with Dana White
They are going over match selection for the next round and Cruz says he hates being in the same room as Faber because he always has something smart-ass to say. Dana tells them to take all the coaching out and strategically make their picks. Cruz says his two top guys are Vinc Pichel and Justin Lawrence while Faber says his two top guys are Joe Proctor and Al Iaquinta.
Weigh-In: Mike Rio – 156 Andy Ogle – 155 lbs
Mike Rio vs. Andy Ogle
Round 1: Ogle throws the first couple of punches before landing a hard over hand right to set the tone. Rio is stalking him but Ogle is keeping him at bay with punches. Ogle stops circling which gives Rio the opening he needs to shoot in and take him down hard. Ogle gets back to his feet and is throwing knees even though Rio has him pressed against the cage. Ogle scrambles free with 90 seconds left and lands several stiff left jabs to Rio’s jaw. Rio respects Ogle’s punching power as he is tentative to go for the takedown. Ogle lands another left jab and Rio shoots for a double leg but time expires as he completes the takedown.
Round 2: Ogle keeps backing up Rio with punches whenever he remotely tries to close the distance. Ogle delivers two leg kicks and follows up with a superman punch. Rio takes him down and pins him against cage and works some good ground and pound in side control. Ogle scrambles to escape but Rio takes his back and works for a rear naked choke while locking him up in a body triangle. Ogle is able to create space in the triangle and gain top control. Ogle lands a few strikes and eventually gets Rio’s back. He is just hammering away on Rio and finds enough room to slip the forearm under the throat and Rio taps out.
Winner: Andy Ogle via submission at 419 of Round 2
Team Faber wins the first round of the tournament 5-3 and Dana White appears via satellite from the Izod Center in New Jersey to announce the two quarterfinal fights that will happen next week and they are Joe Proctor vs. James Vick and Michael Chiesa vs. Justin Lawrence.
