~ UFC/PRIDE heavyweight Soa Palelei (16-3) keeps winning, as he was victorious last night in Melbourne, Australia, defeating Joe Kielur via TKO (Punches) in just 83 seconds. The bout was part of Australia Fighting Championship 3. Palelei has won 6 straight bouts, all via TKO. Palelei lost his only UFC bout to Eddie Sanchez at UFC 79.
~ UFC welterweight veteran Greg Soto lost his Cage Fury Fighting Championship Welterweight Title last night to former training partner George Sullivan at Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa. Sullivan defeated Soto via KO (Punch) at 2:09 into Round 1. Soto (9-3) went 1-2 for the UFC in 9 months.
~ Siyar Bahadurzada, John Maguire, Brad Pickett and Damacio Page each earned $50,000 bonuses for their performances at today’s UFC on FUEL TV 2 event. Bahadurzada earned the night’s “Knockout of the Night” bonus, Maguire picked up the “Submission of the Night” award, and Pickett and Page took home “Fight of the Night” honors.
~ UFC president Dana White on Saturday revealed a United Nations meeting, “Rio +20,” scheduled for June 20-22 in Rio de Janeiro is causing a few complications that may force the company to move UFC 147 to a different date. “A week forward, a week back – somewhere around there,” White told following Saturday’s post-UFC on FUEL TV 2 press conference in Stockholm. “That’s what we’re trying to do.” The United Nations conference is causing two issues, White revealed. First, there is some political pressure on Rio de Janeiro’s mayor is receiving some political pressure to reschedule the event while a peace-focused meeting of world leaders is in town. Second, even if the UFC elected to move forward with the show, there might not be enough hotel rooms available to house incoming visitors.
~ Former Strikeforce Champion Nick Diaz’s opponent in a Jiu Jitsu match on 5/12 in Long Beach will be Braulio Estema, a multi-time world champion. Diaz has yet to decide if he will return to MMA.
