~ Strikeforce lightweight veteran Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerhohm got back on the winning track last Saturday in El Paso, Texas when he submitted (Guillotine Choke) Cleburn Walker at 2:34 into Round 1. The preliminary bout occured at Worldwide MMA 1. Beerhohm, 33, broke a 2 fight losing streak to improve to 16-2.
~ The hottest fighter who has excelled since his UFC release continued to rack up victories as Brazilian Ronys Torres was again victorious on Saturday in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. The lightweight beat Ferrid Kheder via TKO (Punches) in just 22 seconds to win his 10th straight bout. Torres (24-4) went 8-0 in 2011 alone. He went 0-2 in the UFC in 2 months in 2010, losing both bouts by decision. Torres is 26 years old.
~ European promotion Cage Warriors has signed UFC/Strikeforce/DREAM middleweight vet Jesse “JT Money” Taylor (20-8) The former NCAA Division I wrestler recently was on a 6-1 run before a submission loss to the surging Mamed Khalidov at a November KSW event in Poland. His recent wins have come over UFC veterans such as Denis Kang, Murilo Bustamante, Jason Day and Chris Camozzi.
~ UFC welterweight veteran John “Doomsday” Howard (15-7) will face Todd “The Hulk” Chattelle (10-6) next Friday in the main event of Classic Sports & Entertainment 10: Never Surrender. It occurs at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island. The bout is for the promotion’s middleweight championship. Howard went 4-3 in his UFC career.
~ A knee injury has forced “Handsome” Matt Wiman (14-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC) to withdraw from fighting fellow lightweight Mark Bocek (10-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) later this month at UFC 145. The injury occured in this week. UFC 145 takes place April 21 at Atlanta’s Phillips Arena.
