~ Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Maurice Smith, 50, returned to MMA on Friday as a light-heavyweight at the aptly named Resurrection Fighting Alliance 2. PRIDE vet Smith (13-13) KO’d (Right HeadKick) Jorge Cordoba brutally at 2:05 into the 3rd Round. The event occurred in Kearny, Nebraska. This was Smith’s 1st fight in 3.9 years & only his 4th in the last 11 years.
~ PRIDE/DREAM featherweight veteran Masakazu Imanari returned to winning ways on Saturday in Kallang, Singapore. Imanari beat Kevin Belingon via a 78 second Reverse Heel Hook. The bout was part of One Fighting Championship 3 – War of the Lions. Imanari is now 25-10-2 & fights at bantamweight.
~ UFC light-heavyweight veteran Rodney “Sho Nuff The Master” Wallace won last night at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, TX. He beat Derrick Mehmen via unanimous decision. The main card bout was held at the first Worldwide MMA 1 event. Wallace (12-4) suffered 3 straight decision losses in the UFC but did receive two “Fight of the Night” bonuses.
~ UFC President Dana White announced that if a fight from “The Ultimate Fighter: Live” goes into the 3rd round, as it did this past Friday, then the break between the 2nd & 3rd round will only be 60 seconds. On Friday, the network FX, took a 3 minute commercial, forcing fighters Myles Jury & Al Iaquinta to wait for the start of the sudden victory round until the coverage of the show resumed.
~ Despite a contract dispute that’s hit the courts, Bellator CEO and chairman Bjorn Rebney said Vyacheslav “Slava” Vasilevsky (16-1 MMA, 1-0 BFC) will continue to compete for his organization. The fighter’s former home, M-1 Global, recently won a judgement in a Dutch court in relation to the fighter. Rebney said it won’t affect his plans for the New Jersey-based Russian to compete in the season-six middleweight-tournament semifinals next month in Ohio. “He will (fight in the semifinals). He will be fighting in Cleveland.” He meets Maiquel Falcao (29-4 MMA, 1-0 BFC) in Cleveland at Bellator 66.
