~ Former WEC Lightweight title challenger Marcus “The Wrecking Ball” Hicks (10-3) competed for the 1st time in 21 months when he submitted (Guillotine Choke) Joshua Lee at 42 seconds into Round 2. The bout occurred last Saturday in Plano, Texas for the Element Fighting promotion, which was also the name of the show. Hicks won 3 straight bouts to get a title shot but then lost 3 straight to drop his WEC record to 3-3.
~ The Ultimate Fighter 3 middleweight winner Kendall “Da Spyder” Grove (14-9) won last night at the Neil S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Grove defeated PRIDE/DREAM veteran Ikuhisa Minowa (52-33-8) via unanimous decision. The bout headlined ProElite 3 & aired on HDNet.
~ Bellator veteran Sean Loeffler (25-5 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has signed on to the UFC’s middleweight division. Loeffler is a very experienced UFC newcomer who’s won six straight fights and 12 of his past 13 with the only loss coming to notable Bryan Baker in a Bellator fight. The KOTC and Gladiator Challenge vet has 24 stoppages in 25 career wins.
~ “Big Sexy” will be competing next weekend. Not Kevin Nash, but UFC veteran Sean McCorkle (13-2), who faces Mike Gordon (1-0) in a super-heavyweight class on Saturday. The bout occurs at NAAFS’ Caged Fury 16 card in Morgantown, West Virginia. McCorkle, 35, is on a 3 fight winning streak.
~ A new lightweight is now employed by the UFC, Anton Kuivanen (16-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) He’s a Finnish fighter who’s won nine straight fights and 12 of his past 13 fight. A veteran of promotions such as K-1 HERO’S and Fight Festival, the six-year pro has a solid grappling base with that’s led him to eight submission wins in 16 career victories.
