~ Trevor Smith (9-2 MMA, 2-1 SF) wants to file an appeal with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which oversaw his bout this past Saturday with Gian Villante (9-3 MMA, 2-2 SF). Villante began firing hammerfists down on Smith’s head, some of which went landed illegally. Then, Winslow stopped the fight at the 65-second mark. Will Hammond, Smith’s manager, said today that he’s sending in a video and photos of the fight along with a letter asking that the result be reviewed.
~ This past weekend’s “Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine” event drew a 0.93 household rating and an average audience of 344,000 viewers. Despite the Jan. 7 event taking place on Showtime’s “free-preview” weekend, the total viewership was short of the 522,000 viewers Strikeforce averaged for its eight “Arena Series” event in 2011. The most recent event, “Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal,” averaged 460,000 viewers this past month.
~ This Friday, former WEC Lightweight Champion Gabe “Godzilla” Ruediger (17-7) will face Brandon Anderson (3-3) in Commerce, California at Bamma USA- Badbeat 4. Ruediger, a UFC veteran, was released by Zuffa after suffering 2 straight losses. He’s 0-3 in hi UFC career. He was a cast member of the 5th season of The Ultimate Fighter.
~ The UFC has signed dual MMA Champion Daniel Pineda (15-7 MMA, 0-0 UFC) to the featherweight division. He is the reigning featherweight and lightweight champion of the Texas-based Legacy Fighting Championships organization. The former Bellator fighter has won five straight fights and seven of his past eight.
~ In addition to the previously announced pay-per-view and FX portions of Saturday’s UFC 142 broadcasts, Facebook also will stream the night’s first fight between featherweights Felipe Arantes (13-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) and Antonio Carvalho (13-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC). UFC 142 takes place Saturday at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.
