In Memoriam

On this day in 1991, the wrestling world lost 2-time AWA United States Champion Wilbur Snyder at the age of 62. Snyder left football to become a wrestler in 1953, going full time the following year. He quickly rose through the ranks, winning several territorial NWA ‘World’ Titles and several reigns in the AWA. In the mid-60′s, he bought a stake in the Indianapolis NWA territory, whilst also managing a successful stint in Japan. Snyder died of leukemia-related heart failure. He is often credited with inventing and/or popularizing the Abdominal Stretch hold, though I cannot be certain if that is actually true

Today would also have been the 85th birthday of former pro wrestler/manager/referee Bronko Lubich. Lubich is perhaps best remembered for his stint as a referee in WCCW. He was actually a minority owner in WCCW for a time. He was an active wrestler from 1948 – 1972, then retired and became a manager briefly. He returned to the ring in 1973, but didn’t stay active long and started refereeing later that year.

The title change between Liger & Pillman was for the WCW Light Heavyweight Championship. It would not be renamed as the Cruiserweight Championship until 1996.
