~ Bellator welterweight veteran “Judo” Jim Wallhead moved his record to 23-6 with a 48 second, 1st Round KO (Punches) victory over Strikeforce/PRIDE veteran Joey Villaseñor (28-10). The 170lb bout occurred on Saturday at BAMMA 8, which went down in Nottingham, England. Wallhead is now 10-1 in his last 11 fights.
~ UFC/PRIDE heavyweight veteran Don “The Predator” Frye, 46, came out of retirement on Sunday in Lincoln, California for the Gladiator Challenge promotion. Sadly, he was defeated via KO (Punches) at 2:30 of the first round by Ruben “Warpath” Villarreal (20-23-3), who’s 41. The first bout between the two in 2006 ended in a draw. Frye’s record is now 20-9-1.
~ Fernando Gonzalez (17-9 MMA, 0-0 SF) vs. Eddie Mendez (5-0-1 MMA, 0-0 SF) in a middleweight preliminary contest is set for Strikeforce’s year-end event on Saturday. “Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal” takes place at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego.
~ Danny “Last Call” Castillo (12-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC) has taken the place of Ramsey Nijem in the UFC 141 fight with fellow lightweight Anthony Njokuani (14-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC). Nijem suffered an undisclosed injury. UFC 141 takes place Dec. 30 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Both men are WEC veterans.
~ Herb Dean, who recently was voted “Best Referee” at the 2011 World MMA Awards, is the referee for the 185lb title fight of Luke Rockhold vs. Keith Jardine, and Adelaide Byrd, Marcos Rosales and Junichiro Kamijo will serve as judges for the Strikeforce main event. All selections have officiated several events in Nevada. “Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine” takes place Jan. 7 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
