Walkout: Morton blasts Nash following controversial finish

rock n rollIt’s hard to be upset when you’re the winner in the main event of a pay-per-view, but that’s where Ricky Morton is right now.

“The man has no respect for this business or this company. It was like he said. All he cared about was the money,” said Morton, who defeated Kevin Nash by countout in the controversial main event at the AWE Night of Legends pay-per-view.

The match had begun as scheduled as a tag-team match pitting Nash and Diamond Dallas Page against The Rock-n-Roll Express, but AWE CEO Marvin Ward, at Nash’s pre-match urging, changed the match to a one-on-one with Nash and Morton barely two minutes in.

Nash gained the upper hand and dominated the action for the first five minutes before Morton rallied and knocked the big man off his feet and began working on Nash’s balky left knee. Nash regained control and chokeslammed the bloodied Morton to the canvas for what seemed to the fans in attendance to be the coup de grace, but Morton kicked out at two.

kevin nashNash grabbed the house mic and asked Morton what his beef was with him, then handed the microphone to Morton, who through his crimson mask reiterated what he had been saying since a 2002 YouTube video in which he blasted Nash for ruining the wrestling business.

The awkward in-match conversation over, Nash grabbed Morton for a finishing powerbomb and drove Morton through the mat. But then, instead of covering Morton for the climactic 1-2-3, Nash climbed out of the ring and walked to the back.

Special guest referee Ron Garvin counted Nash out and declared Morton the winner.

Nash declined to comment on the walkout afterward. Ward also declined to comment, though he was visibly upset with his former tag-team partner backstage after the show.

A source in the front office said what Ward is upset about is that “the fans deserved to see a finish one way or the other.”

Maybe after delivering two finishers – the Snake Eyes that had broken Morton’s forehead wide open and then the chokeslam – and seeing Morton kick out at two following both, Nash was afraid that Morton would kick out after the powerbomb.

“I wasn’t done yet, not by a long shot,” Morton said.

“I’ve been saying this for a long, long time. My mouth wrote a check 10 years ago, and he was here to cash it. And that bastard stole that money just like he stole all that money from Time Warner and stole all that money from Vince McMahon.”

Can’t say I disagree with Morton, but he also sounds like a bitter old man.
