~ The Ultimate Fighter 11 participant Joseph “Leonidas” Henle remained undefeated last week in Commerce, California. Henle (5-0-1) defeated Gabriel Lopez via TKO (Punches) at 1:40 into the first round. The middleweight bout was the main event of BAMMA USA- Badbeat 3 10 days ago.
~ Jack Shields, father and manager of UFC welterweight Jake Shields, died Monday at his home in the Sacramento, Calif., area. He was 67 years old. According to his son, Jack Shields was working on sponsorship business for the fighter when he sat down to rest and fell asleep, passing away peacefully sometime thereafter. Serving as Jake’s manager, Shields negotiated his son’s contracts and business deals, including his current agreement with the UFC.
~ A lightweight bout between Bobby Green (15-5 MMA, 0-1 SF) and Charon Spain (6-6 MMA, 0-0 SF) is set for the Strikeforce Challengers 19 card. The event airs on Showtime from Las Vegas on September 23. The bout is set for the prelims.
~ An injured shoulder has forced featherweight Manny Gamburyan (11-6 MMA, 2-2 UFC) out of next month’s UFC 135 event. He was scheduled to face top contender Diego Nunes (16-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC). UFC 135 takes place Sept. 24 at Denver’s Pepsi Center.
~ Onetime Strikeforce welterweight challenger Paul Daley (27-11-2) meets Luigi Fioravanti (22-10) at Ringside MMA 12. Ringside MMA 12 takes place Oct. 21 at Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Montreal booking marks Daley’s first time in Montreal since his infamous post-fight suckerpunch of Josh Koscheck at UFC 113 that prompted the UFC to fire him.
