~ UFC/WEC/DREAM welterweight veteran John “The Natural” Alessio choked out late-replacement opponent Shawn Fitzsimmons via Rear Naked Choke at the 3:52 mark of the second round. The bout was held under the Superior Cage Combat promotion. Alessio moves his record to 32-14.
~ PRIDE/Sengoku heavyweight veteran Pawel Nastula improved to 3-4 with a TKO (Punches) victory over Andrzej Wronski just 69 seconds into their main event fight on Saturday. The bout was held in Koszalin, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland for the All Sports Promotion. Nastula, 41, was the 1996 gold medallist at the Olympic Games in Judo.
~ The UFC has signed a 25 year-old undefeated bantamweight prospect, Joseph Sandoval (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC). Sandoval has only been fighting professionally since April 2010 but has quickly earned six straight wins. The Bighead MMA product, has earned five victories under the Shark Fights banner.
~ WEC light-heavyweight veteran Glover Teixeira won for the 4th time this year by defeating UFC veteran Marvin Eastman via KO (Punch) at 4:00 into round 1. The bout was “Shooto Brazil- Fight for BOPE’s” main event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Teixeira is one of the top light-heavyweight prospects not signed to the UFC. Teixeira is on a 13 fight winning streak & his record stands at 15-2.
~ A welterweight main card battle is set for Strikeforce Challengers 19 when Brian Melancon (5-2 MMA, 0-1 SF) faces Felipe Portela (7-0 MMA, 0-0 SF). Strikeforce Challengers 19 takes place Sept. 23 at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Five of new Strikeforce signing Peralta’s seven opponents remain winless in pro competition.
