WWE Summerslam 2011 Preview and Predictions‏

Aug 13, 2011 - by staff

Hey Gerweck.net readers, this is Joseph Nocera here to provide thoughts, previews and predictions for the biggest party of the summer, the 24th annual WWE Summerslam! Summerslam will be taking place this Sunday night at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, California. This pay-per-view looks great from top to bottom and it looks like this may be one of the best pay-per-views of the year. We are going to kick this off with the preview for the Undisputed WWE Championship Match:

This match has been anticipated to be one of the biggest matches in Summerslam history. This match will be a rematch from last month’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view. At the Money in the Bank PPV, CM Punk defeated John Cena to win the WWE Championship. Prior to Money in the Bank, CM Punk announced that he would be leaving the WWE after his match with Cena. The next night on Raw, Vince McMahon announced a single-elimination tournament to crown a new WWE Champion. The tournament featured R-Truth, Alex Riley, United States Champion Dolph Ziggler, Rey Mysterio, Kofi Kingston, Jack Swagger, Alberto Del Rio and The Miz. In the finals, Rey Mysterio defeated The Miz to win the WWE Championship. Later that night by order of WWE Chief Operating Officer Triple H, Rey defended the championship against John Cena. In that match, Cena won the WWE Championship. But after the match, CM Punk made a shocking return after 8 days and he came back with the WWE Championship he won at Money in the Bank. For the first time in WWE history, there were two WWE Champions. The next week on Raw, Triple H announced that John Cena and CM Punk would go at it again in a match in LA at Summerslam. To quote Triple H, one match, one winner and one Undisputed WWE Champion. This past Monday night of Raw, Triple H dropped another bombshell when he announced that he would be the special guest referee for the match. I believe that this match could very well be equally as good, maybe if not better than the match these two men had at Money in the Bank. CM Punk has been on a roll as of late as has John Cena. Both men picked up victories this past week on Raw. John Cena defeated former World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger while CM Punk defeated the 2011 Royal Rumble winner and current Raw Money in the Bank holder Alberto Del Rio. Both men are fired up and ready to let it all out on Sunday at the Staples Centre. John Cena has history in the city of LA. In 2005 at Wrestlemania 21, Cena defeated John Bradshaw Layfield to win his first WWE Championship. CM Punk will look to use his mixed martial arts background to ground Cena and get the upper hand while John Cena will want to use his lightning quick offence to slow Punk down. But you also have to think about what kind of an impact Triple H will have on this match. The WWE C.O.O has history with both CM Punk and John Cena and the former 13 time WWE Champion has said that he will call the match down the middle. I believe that this match will be one that members of the WWE Universe will talk about for a long time. I see John Cena defeating CM Punk and becoming the Undisputed WWE Champion at 36 minutes. You also have to consider the chances of possibly Alberto Del Rio cashing in on Cena. I believe that will happen and it will lead to a triple threat match between Del Rio, Cena and CM Punk at Night of Champions. My final prediction is John Cena becomes the Undisputed WWE Champion.

Prediction: John Cena becomes the Undisputed WWE Champion in 36 minutes

This will be the 4th time in a row that these two men have competed on a pay-per-view. This whole feud began on the May 5 edition of Smackdown when Randy Orton defeated Christian to win the World Heavyweight Championship five days after Christian won the championship. Orton defeated Christian on two other occasions on PPV, defeating him at Over the Limit and Capitol Punishment. Two weeks after the match at Capitol Punishment, it was announced that Orton would defend the championship at Money in the Bank against Christian for the third time. Christian added a stipulation to the match where if Randy Orton was disqualified, Christian would win the World Heavyweight Champion. At Money in the Bank, Christian spat in the face of Randy which forced Orton to go crazy and deliver a low blow to Christian. The referee disqualified Orton and Christian became the new World Heavyweight Champion. On the July 29 edition of Smackdown, WWE C.O.O Triple H announced that Randy Orton would get a rematch against Christian at Summerslam for the World Heavyweight Championship and he also announced that it would be a No Holds Barred match. The rules of the match are simple: no disqualifications and no countouts. The only way to win the match is by pinfall or submission. This match will be brutal and it will leave a toll on both men. Both men have momentum on their side. Two weeks ago on Smackdown, Christian pinned Randy Orton in a tag team match. And two night ago on Smackdown, Randy Orton picked up a huge victory over former World Heavyweight Champion The Great Khali. Both men know they can pin each other and both men know that they can pick up a win. Orton will want to use his fast paced offence to attack Christian while the current champion will want to use his unique offence to defeat WWE’s apex predator. I think that there will be a decent amount of weapon use in this match. I also can see a possible interference from former WWE superstar and former World Heavyweight Champion Edge. Edge is in Los Angeles for Summerslam Axxess and if WWE decided to bring Edge to LA for Axxess, I am positive that they would use him in some sort of way at the pay-per-view. I see Christian winning this match and walking out of Summerslam still the World Heavyweight Champion.

Prediction: Christian retains the World Heavyweight Championship at 17 minutes

This match will be very unique. Mark Henry has been on a huge roll as of late, taking out superstars such as Big Show, Kane and Vladimir Kozlov. WWE superstars have been trying to stay away from the world’s strongest man. Mark Henry told Smackdown General Manager Theodore Long that he wanted competition. Before Long was ready to fire Henry, Sheamus came out and told the former ECW Champion that he would give him competition. Sheamus has got into the head of Mark Henry and he has made Mark Henry scared to step into the ring with him. Last week, it was announced on Smackdown that Mark Henry would go one-on-one with Sheamus at Summerslam in Los Angeles. Sheamus has been on an incredible roll as of late, over the last two weeks he has defeated both The Great Khali and also the World Heavyweight Champion Christian by countout. Mark Henry has been on a roll as well, picking up victories over Vladimir Kozlov and Johnny Curtis. Mark Henry has been dominant at the last two pay-pre-view events, attacking Big Show at Capitol Punishment and then defeating Big Show at Money in the Bank and injuring him, leaving him on the sidelines. I have been a big fan of Mark Henry since he was drafted to Smackdown during the draft. Sheamus wants to put an end to Mark Henry’s destruction and he plans to do that at Summerslam. Sheamus is used to being the bigger man in the match, but at Summerslam that will not be the case. Mark Henry will want to use his size to his advantage while Sheamus will want to use his power, his heart and determination to pull off a win over the world’s strongest man. This match will be a good match and I see Sheamus picking up a huge victory at Summerslam in 10 minutes. This will put a dent in Mark Henry’s path of destruction. I believe that this match will lead Sheamus into bigger and better things, maybe a World Heavyweight Championship match at Night of Champions or possibly Hell in a Cell in October? I really hope so because I can see Sheamus as the top dog on Smackdown. For Mark Henry, I hope that this match leads to a feud with a big superstar on Smackdown, maybe someone like Randy Orton? We will see what the future holds.

Prediction: Sheamus wins at 10 minutes

This match will be very interesting. Kelly Kelly has been in my opinion very successful as of late. Ever since going to Raw from Smackdown in the draft, she has been picking up some huge victories, getting time on pay-per-views and also, she won the Divas Championship from Brie Bella on June 20. Two weeks ago on Raw, a battle royal was held where the winner would receive a Divas Championship match against the blonde bombshell at Summerslam. Beth Phoenix won the battle royal after eliminating the Bella Twins and she earned a championship match. After the match Kelly Kelly, who was on commentary, went into the ring to congratulate Beth on winning. After the two embraced in the ring, Beth showed a new aggression that we haven’t seen from the Glamazon for a few years as she attacked the Divas Champion. After the attack, Beth told Kelly that the days of the cute, perky bimbos are over and that a new force would be taking over the Divas division. Beth has joined forces with former WWE Divas Champion and friend, Natalya. It will be interesting to see what affect Natalya will leave on this match. This past week on Raw after Beth defeated Eve Torres, Kelly Kelly got some payback from the week before and she blindsided the former WWE Women’s Champion. A lot of people are predicting that Beth Phoenix will walk out of Summerslam with the Divas Championship, but I think otherwise. Since the day she won the championship, Kelly Kelly has been a fighting champion and she has defined the odds that have been stacked against her. Kelly will be giving this match her all and she will be giving Beth one hell of a fight. I see Kelly Kelly pulling off an upset and retaining the WWE Divas Championship at Summerslam after 5 minutes. I think that Kelly will continue to feud with Beth, which will lead to possibly a rematch at Night of Champions. Or we could see Phoenix’s new ally Natalya get an opportunity at the championship. We will see what happens.

Prediction: Kelly Kelly retains the WWE Divas Championship at 5 minutes

This match was announced this past Friday night on Smackdown. Since Daniel Bryan defeated seven other Smackdown superstars and won the Smackdown Money in the Bank Ladder match, we have seen Wade Barrett complain about Bryan saying that he should have won the Money in the Bank. Two weeks after Bryan won the Money in the Bank briefcase, Daniel Bryan told Barrett that he earned it and that he would be cashing in the Money in the Bank briefcase at Wrestlemania 28 in Miami next April. Wade Barrett was annoyed by that statement, attempting to attack Bryan. But Bryan got the upper hand, forcing the former Intercontinental Champion to tap out. Daniel Bryan has been on a roll since Money in the Bank, picking up victories over the likes of Heath Slater and Tyson Kidd. But Daniel Bryan lost a bit of momentum after he lost to the Raw Money in the Bank winner Alberto Del Rio this past Friday on Smackdown. After that match, Wade Barrett came out and laid the former United States Champion, gaining momentum for this match. Both Wade Barrett and Daniel Bryan have history with each other. Both of these men competed in NXT Season One and also, both of these men were members of the original Nexus. Wade Barrett will want to use his strength and height to an advantage while the current Mr. Smackdown Money in the Bank will want to use his quick and risk-taking offence to get the better of Wade Barrett. I believe that this match will be a very entertaining match with a lot of good spots that will excite not only the fans in the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, but also fans all over the world watching the event in places such as Australia, Germany, France, New Zealand, Canada, Ghana and over 150 other countries. I see a very competitive match which will see Wade Barrett picking up a big victory at Summerslam in 12 minutes. I believe that this feud will continue on over the next month or so. After the feud, I believe that both men will go on to feud with some of Smackdown’s biggest superstars. I could see Daniel Bryan feuding with the World Heavyweight Champion Christian while Wade Barrett goes on to feud with someone along the lines of Sheamus or Randy Orton. We will see what the future holds for these two Smackdown superstars.

Prediction: Wade Barrett wins at 12 minutes

Well there you have it, the Summerslam preview and predictions. I hope that all the members of the WWE Universe get the chance to see this pay-per-view because it looks like a very good show. I hope you all enjoyed reading the previews and predictions, and remember to catch WWE Summerslam this Sunday night from the Staples Centre in Los Angeles!
