~ Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Ricco “Suave” Rodriguez won last night in Frisco, Texas, at the 4,500-seat Dr. Pepper Arena. Ricco defeated Doug Williams (not the Impact Wrestling wrestler) in a rematch via Rear Naked Choke at 2:16 in the first round. It was Shark Fights’ promotion 17th event. Rodriguez has won 12 straight fights to improve to 47-11.
~ Pancrase vet Eiji Ishikawa (22-16-2 MMA, 0-0 DREAM) will face DREAM welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis (14-6 MMA, 5-0 DREAM) at Saturday’s “DREAM: Japan GP Final” event. The bout will be a 79-kilogram (174-pound) non-title catchweight fight.
~ Middleweights Derek Brunson (7-0 MMA, 1-0 SF) and Lumumba Sayers (4-1 MMA, 0-0 SF) are the latest targeted additions to “Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Henderson.” The event is on July 30 at Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill.Brunson, who finished his first 6 opponents, trains out of Renzo Gracie’s academy in New York City.
~ A press conference to officially announce September’s “UFC 135: Jones vs. Rampage” event will be held on Tuesday, July 19, and the public is invited to attend. Starting at 12 p.m. ET (10 a.m. MT local time), the session takes place at Denver’s Braun’s Bar & Grill, located at 1055 Auraria Pkwy. UFC 135 takes place Sept. 24 at Denver’s Pepsi Center. UFC president Dana White will be in attendance.
~ Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson (4-2) returns to competition in August, though this time with boxing gloves on rather than the four-ounce variety. Gary Shaw Productions and Tony Holden Promotions announced Slice will box James Wade in a four-round main event at Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Okla. The previously announced event takes place Aug. 13.
