More on THQ dropping 'Smackdown vs. Raw' series

Both THQ and WWE made the call to drop the “Smackdown vs. Raw” name from the video game series going forward and starting fresh with the new “WWE 12” (for 2012) branding starting this November. According to a report by The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the decision was largely due in part to both brands not being separated enough and no real “brand rivalry.” This also explains the company dropping the Bragging Rights PPV concept since they would normally co-promote that PPV event with the release of a new WWE “Smackdown vs. Raw” video game. Footage of the game will be shown at E3 from June 7-9.

i like the concept, but the shows were always mixed with raw and smackdown guys which kinda made it pointless

Yeah, it’s hard to believe in the “seperate brands” idea when Alberto Del Rio is on every Raw and SmackDown.

Or when Riley was traded to Smackdown but was on RAW.

Bragging Rights was a great PPV idea, but it just doesn’t work when the whole concept of a brand rivalry is non-existant. It would have been a great event in, say, 2003.

It’s a bit of a shame, because the whole separate brands, infighting and invading, etc, was a fantastic idea. It could make a comeback once they’ve decided to make enough stars for both brands to survive.

Makes perfect sense to scrap that particular marketing and go straight in with the brand as a whole.

Considering that Bragging Rights was basically a Survivor Series PPV a month earlier, I never liked the Bragging Rights idea, or at least not only a month before the Survivor Series, because that event can also be about which team survives at the end.

Actually brand rivally hit it’s peak in 2005 and since then has died down after Eric Bischoff was expelled from the company
