~ UFC/Bellator welterweight veteran Ryan Thomas dropped to 12-7 when he was submitted (Armbar) by Jonatas Naveas at 4:08 of the first round in Racine, Wisconsin on Saturday. The bout was for the “Combat USA” promotion. Thomas went 0-2 in the UFC in 2007 & was eliminated last year during the Bellator welterweight tournament.
~ The UFC’s quest to install judges’ monitors at future events soon will be discussed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. UFC officials recently earned approval to provide the monitors at UFC 131 in Vancouver, and the California State Athletic Commission has used them for the UFC’s past three shows in the state. The item now is on the agenda of Friday’s NSAC hearing in Las Vegas. Its hoped that monitors will be used at UFC 130.
~ Las Vegas’ newest mixed martial arts promotion, Superior Cage Combat, debuts on May 21 with a nine-fight card full of recognizable talent. “Superior Cage Combat 1: Lopez vs. Buchholz” takes place at Bally’s Event Center at Bally’s Las Vegas. A lightweight matchup between two-time UFC veteran Steve Lopez (12-4) and five-time UFC contestant Justin Buchholz (10-6) headlines the card.
~ A potential slugfest of a fight has been added to UFC 132 with Andre Winner (11-5-1 MMA, 2-4-1 UFC) taking on fellow lightweight Anthony Njokuani (13-5 MMA, 0-1 UFC). UFC 132, which is the UFC’s Independence Day-weekend show, takes place July 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
~ After two previous bookings fell apart, UFC officials announced a middleweight fight between veterans Jorge Rivera (19-8 MMA, 7-6 UFC) and Alessio Sakara (15-8 MMA, 6-5 UFC) for UFC 133: Evans vs. Davis. UFC 133 takes place Aug. 6 in Philadelphia. The city’s Wells Fargo Center plays host to the event.
