Hey guys back again for my predictions for UFC 117.
Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen
I have been watching MMA for about 7 years now, and have seen some great battles and alot of trash talk. Chael Sonnen is by far the best, and has hyped this fight up huge. Sonnen came back to the UFC in February 2009 in a fight against Demian Maia. That fight didn’t go so well for Chael as he was submitted with a triangle choke. He has since won 3 straight decisions against Dan Miller, and top 10 fighters Yushin Okami and Nate Marquardt. Anderson Silva has won a record 11 times in a row in the octagon beating some of the best contenders thrown at him. Despite being criticized as the Michael Jackson of MMA he still possesses some of the best striking in the history of the sport. If Chael wants to win he has to take this fight to the ground, but he can’t sit in guard with Anderson as he did with Nate Marquardt and almost paid the price for it. Chael has been submitted 7 times in his career and thats more times then Anderson has even lost. At first when this fight was announced i was leaning towards Chael to win by decision, but with all the trash talk and disrespect towards Silva i think hes working up a sleeping giant. My prediction is Anderson Silva submission round 3 via triangle choke, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Silva gets suspended for not letting go of the choke
Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch
This long awaited rematch is finally going to happen. These 2 fought in June 2006 with Fitch winning by second round TKO. Since then both fighters have improved, and also gotten title shots along the way. There only other loss since there last fight was to Georges St. Pierre, both my decision. Jon Fitch doesn’t hide his style, as he is great wrestler, and former team captain for the University of Purdue. Thiago Alves is a phenomenal Muay Thai fighter, and his take down defence is some of the best in the division. With Alves missing weight today who knows how it will affect him, and also keep in mind he hasn’t fought in 13 months. Fitch will look to take this fight to the ground, and will catch a knee in the process and Alves will finish him by TKO avenging his loss from 4 years ago, and will be the number 1 contender for the UFC Welterweight division.
Ricardo Almeida vs. Matt Hughes
The most respected Welterweight of all time returns at UFC 117 in a tough fight against Renzo Gracie black belt Ricardo Almeida. Almeida is looking to avenge a defeat to his mentor at the hands of Hughes at UFC 112 as Hughes won that fight by TKO in round 3. Hughes has won 2 in a row with wins over Matt Serra, and Renzo Gracie and with a win over Almeida will make an argument for a title shot. Almeida on the other hand is just making his second welterweight appearance coming off a win over Matt Brown in March. Almeida spent his whole career at middleweight. He holds a professional record of 12 wins and 3 losses, with 4 wins by submission, and 8 by decision and has only been finished once. Almeida holds notable wins over Nate Marquardt, Kazuo Misaki, Eugene Jackson, and Kendall Grove. Anywhere this fight goes i think Almeida has the advantage. I think he is a better striker, and is fantastic off his back. Hughes is showing signs of his age, and will get submitted in the second round, and Almeida will be a huge threat and possibly top contender in the welterweight division.
Clay Guida vs. Rafael dos Anjos
These 2 fighters are 2 of the most exciting fighters to watch. This has fight of the night written all over it as these fighters just never stop. Dos Anjos is a BJJ fighter with great submissions, and that will be difficult for Guida as he has had trouble with grapplers better then him being defeated 6 times by submission in his career. My prediction is Dos Anjos by third round submission via rear naked choke.
Junior dos Santos vs. Roy Nelson
Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch isn’t the only number 1 contendership on the card. The winner of this fight will fight either Cain Velasquez or Brock Lesnar some time in early 2011. Roy Nelson is a TUF champion and is 2-0 inside the octagon with knockouts over Brendan Shaub, and Stefan Struve. Dos Santos is 5-0 in the UFC with huge wins over Fabricio Werdum, Stefan Struve, Mirko Cro Cop, Gilbert Yvel and Gabriel Gonzaga, all by way of Knockout or TKO. No one should write off Roy Nelson just because he looks like the Pillsbury doughboy. He has knockout power and is a BJJ Black belt, and has fought the likes of Jeff Monson, Andrei Arlovski, and Ben Rothwell. He said he isn’t afraid to trade with dos Santos, but he has to take this fight to the round out of dos Santos’ game as we have yet to see him be on his back, or even fight a good wrestler yet. My prediction is Junior will stuff a couple of Roy’s takedowns and frustrates him to throw punches leaving his jaw just to put it on a silver platter for Junior dos Santos, as Junior will be the number 1 contender.
Dustin Hazelitt defeat Rick Story via third round armbar.
Phil Davis defeats Rodney Wallace via first round guillotine
Tim Boetsch defeats Tim Brown via second round TKO.
Charlie Brenneman defeats Johnny Hendricks by Decision
Ben Saunders defeats Dennis Hallman via first round TKO
Stefan Struve defeats Christian Morecraft via first round triangle choke
Fight of the night- Guida/dos Anjos
Knockout of the night- Junior dos Santos
Submission of the night- Dustin Hazelitt
